  • A point-and-shoot camera, also called a compact camera, is a still camera designed primarily for simple operation . Most use focus free lenses or autofocus for focusing, automatic systems for setting the exposure options, and have flash units built in.

  • Commonly refers to a point-and-shoot camera.

  • The general term for small, light cameras designed for convenience. While they do not offer interchangeable lenses, they are perfectly usable for snapshots, and some do employ high-performance optics. Ideal for travel or “visual notebook” applications.

  • 1080p is the shorthand identification for a set of HDTV video modes which are characterised by 1,080 lines of vertical resolution (1,080 horizontal scan lines) and progressive scan (meaning the image is not interlaced, unlike the 1080i display standard).

I played with video briefly, long enough to be impressed by the S95's capabilities while simultaneously reminded why compact "still" cameras do not do good video. With the way the lens must be designed to fit in such a small package, it is physically impossible for these little guys to handle on-the-fly zooming and focusing. That fact alone makes it almost impossible to capture anything but "moving photos" with them.

For the most part the camera is able to maintain the same excellent color and clarity it provides for stills. It does, however, have an extremely annoying tendency to overexpose the video. As far as I can tell, this is a totally automatic process and the only way around it is to change what is in the frame.

Sound quality was surprisingly good with the S95's stereo mics. While it is still vulnerable to wind noise, the effect was not nearly as bad as expected. The camera does occasionally get confused about the ambient noise level and crank up the gain, resulting in an electronic whine being recorded in the video.

The image stabilization works quite well. The test video I made for this was taken one handed, without looking, while flying down a washboard road. I was amazed when the result did not cause the usual motion sickness as many point-and-shoot videos do.

I'm still rather surprised at Canon's decision to gimp the S95 with 720p, especially when the T2i (which is of the same generation and shares the same processor) records in 1080p. Combined with the other inherent limitations in this type of camera, this makes video on the S95 almost frustrating enough to buy a dedicated video camera - and this is coming from someone who barely has time to deal with photos, let alone video processing.

Full HD recording with 1080p delivers breathtaking images and brilliant resolution. Plus with a 9 megapixel camera your memories will never look so good. With an ultra compact body, which is ultra light-weight with a unique ergonomic design, recording is super comfortable.
