Warblers of the Great Lakes Region and Eastern North America

Thanks to their distinctive colors and lively calls, warblers are a favorite among birders. However sightings can be rare due to the warbler's migratory nature, feeding habits, and sometime-endangered status.
Warblers is a handy reference for watching these fast-moving and elusive birds. It explains why warblers are difficult to spot and what you can do to see more of them. It accurately identifies 42 species found in the Great Lakes region and eastern North America. By focusing on this one family within a defined geographical area, the book's format is compact yet packed with information.
Photographing these highly spirited birds is never easy. Birders will appreciate the crisp, clean images of the warblers in their natural environment. Comparison pages group similar-looking birds on a single spread for quick reference. Each species is presented in accurate, full color to ensure precise identification. Species are presented in taxonomic order to show how one relates to the next. The information is concisely organized and includes:

'Mr McGregor's Garden', Beatrix Potter House, Hill Top, Near Sawrey

'Mr. McGregor's Garden', Beatrix Potter House, Hill Top, Near Sawrey, Cumbria, Lake District. Taken with my 1.3 mp phone camera.

This 17th century farmhouse was the home of Beatrix Potter. She wrote many of her famous children's stories in this little house. Characters such as Tom Kitten, Samuel Whiskers and Jemima Puddleduck were all created here, and the books contain many pictures based on the house and garden.

She bought Hill Top farm in 1905 from the proceeds of the sale of the first of her first book, Peter Rabbit. The property is now a museum, owned and run by the National Trust and is one of the most visited houses in the Lake District.
She also lived down the road at Castle Cottage but that is not open to the public.

Beatrix bought many pieces of land and property in and around Sawrey, including the Old Post Office, Castle Cottage and a number of small farms.
In 1913, aged 47, she married William Heelis in London and moved to Lakeland, living at Castle Cottage.

A House in Wuhan, Hubei, China

A House in Wuhan, Hubei, China

Hubei (help·info) (Chinese: ??; pinyin: Hubei; Wade-Giles: Hu-pei; Postal map spelling: Hupeh) is a central province of the People's Republic of China. Its abbreviation is ? (pinyin: E), an ancient name associated with the eastern part of the province since the Qin Dynasty. The name Hubei means "north of the lake", referring to Hubei's position north of Dongting Lake.[1] The capital of Hubei is Wuhan.

Hubei borders Henan to the north, Anhui to the east, Jiangxi to the southeast, Hunan to the south, Chongqing to the west, and Shaanxi to the northwest. The high-profile Three Gorges Dam is located in Yichang, in western Hubei.

A popular unofficial name for Hubei is Chu (Chinese: ?; pinyin: Chu), after the powerful state of Chu that existed here during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.

Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods

Winner of the 1999 National Outdoor Book Award: Outdoor Classic Category.
Over half a century ago, John Rowlands set out by canoe into the wilds of Canada to survey land for a timber company. After paddling alone for several days—"it was so quiet I could hear the drops from the paddle hitting the water"—he came upon "the lake of my boyhood dreams." He never left. He named the place Cache Lake because there was stored the best that the north had to offer—timber for a cabin; fish, game, and berries to live on; and the peace and contentment he felt he could not live without.

Cache Lake Country is a vivid and faithful chronicle of life in the great Northern Forest and a storehouse of valuable information on woodcraft and nature. Here is folklore and philosophy, but most of all wisdom about the woods and the inventiveness and self-reliance they demand. The author explains how to make moccasins, barrel stoves, lean-to shelters, outdoor bake ovens, sailing canoes, and hundreds of other ingenious and useful gadgets, all illustrated in the margins with 230 enchanting drawings by Henry B. Kane.

Canon PowerShot G2 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom

Quite simply, the Canon PowerShot G2 is an elegant, easy-to-use joy of a digital camera that boasts impressive 4-megapixel resolution, a 3x optical zoom, a bright LCD monitor that swivels off to the side of the camera and tilts up and down as needed, and maximum overall creative control in addition to a fully automatic mode. Of course, none of this comes as much of a surprise to anyone familiar with its popular predecessor, the PowerShot G1. Both of these cameras have features and picture-taking modes similar to Canon's EOS cameras, which means they have what Canon calls a "very camera-like feel." Some of the G2's more obvious improvements over the G1 (besides higher resolution) include a champagne gold finish, larger grip for easier handling, improved image and color quality, new photo-effect shooting mode for various effects, including black-and-white and sepia, and a new high-speed selectable three-point autofocus.
The G2's 4-megapixel CCD captures images at user-selectable resolutions of 2,272 x 1,704, 1,600 x 1,200, 1,024 x 768, and 640 x 480. This range allows for detail-rich 8-by-10-inch prints that match the results of film cameras as well as easy-to-upload images for the Web and e-mail. Choose between three varying degrees of JPEG compression or store images in the 10-bit RAW data file format for faster transfer without any image quality loss. Your computer easily translates the RAW files into TIFF files using Canon's included software.
The telescoping, 3x optical zoom lens (34-102mm equivalent on a 35mm camera) with 3.6x digital zoom, offers both automatic and manual focus control. The improved, high-speed, selectable three-point autofocus system allows flexibility in composition over the single focus point of the G1. A distance scale has been added on the LCD monitor for precision focus adjustment that works best for extreme close-ups. Improved circuitry allows the G2 to perform these advanced functions with faster image capture times and longer battery life than the G1.
Like the G1, the G2 has point-and-shoot settings that take the guesswork out of almost all situations, but the manual controls and creative options are where this camera stands out from the competition. Twelve EOS-style shooting modes allow for a wide range of creative possibilities, with manual focus zoom, adjustable aperture priority at 50, 100, 200, and 400 ISO, selectable shutter speed, and six preset white balances--sunny, cloudy, tungsten, etc. Canon has provided four presets for professional results when shooting for maximum depth of field, portraits, landscapes, and night scenes. Other creative controls include the photo-effect mode that allows four possible variations of the normal color saturation: vivid color, standard color, sepia tones, and standard black-and-white.
Two video formats have also been included, allowing for 30 and 120 seconds of moving images with audio. Slow shutter-speed mode allows extended exposures in low-light situations. Autoexposure bracketing allows you to intentionally over- and underexpose two extra shots to help capture the best picture possible. Five different flash modes, including red-eye reduction, handle after-dark challenges. The TTL hot shoe is fully compatible with all Canon EX-series Speedlite flashes. The included software package goes beyond standard image processing with a remote capture function that allows complete control and manipulation of the camera functions from your computer keyboard. Canon's Stitch Assist program allows you to combine up to four images into one, seamless, panoramic view.
Exterior design features include the highly versatile LCD monitor from the G1 that needs no improvement; its 270-degree rotation allows all angles of image composition from around corners to self-portraits. Changes in ergonomics, as requested by the users of the G1, include a contoured grip for better one-handed shooting and a more streamlined look. Photographers new to the digital market will find the G2 as easy to use as previous PowerShot models, while professionals will be pleased with the improved selection of creative options for capturing the best possible images.
The G2 comes complete with USB port and cable for connection to PC or Macintosh computers; Canon's digital camera software package for downloading, processing, and organizing your images; a NTSC cable for connecting to a television set; a rechargeable BP-511 lithium-ion battery pack and AC adapter for charging the battery in the camera; a generous 32 MB CompactFlash card; infrared remote control; lens cap; and neck strap. The camera weighs about 14.8 ounces, and its dimensions are 4.8(W) by 3.0(H) by 2.5(D) inches.

Ccd Camera Module

ccd camera module

    ccd camera
  • A charge-coupled device (CCD) is a device for the movement of electrical charge, usually from within the device to an area where the charge can be manipulated, for example conversion into a digital value. This is achieved by "shifting" the signals between stages within the device one at a time.

  • Short for "charge-coupled device." A CCD is a light-sensitive electronic detector widely used in making astronomical images. Sensitive over a wide range of wavelengths, and much more efficient than emulsion in gathering light, CCDs are often used to image extremely faint objects.

  • A Charge Coupled Device, or CCD camera, converts light into electrical charges. This type of camera is used often in astrophotography.

Bridgehouse Marina 3 Reprocessed with Silkypix

Bridgehouse Marina 3 Reprocessed with Silkypix

I have recently become interested in extending the performance of my Fuji S5 pro camera. I was aware that the CCD is 6.3 Mp, but that the camera upscales the image data by roughly 2x by using data from an extra set of photocells. It struck me that this is all very well as long as the computer can read all of the data, otherwise the S5 is no more than a 6.3 Mp camera in a D200 body (admittedly with a better operating system).
I read that the RAW module in Photoshop before 2007 cannot read the extra data and I discovered that my copy of 'Hyper Utility' (Fuji's own RAW software, which is NOT supplied with the camera) was corrupted.
I then stumbled across 'Silkypix', an image developer studio that will read all of the data in a Fuji RAF. I downloaded the trial and reprocessed some images (of which this is an example), tonemapping the 16bit TIFFS in Photomatix and then finishing them off in Photoshop.
When enlarged the improvement in detail and texture is quite easy to see.
I have bought a new copy of Hyper Utility, and as soon as it arrives I will be able to compare the two properly.

Dead Bolt: A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery (Haunted Home Repair Mystery)

Turner Construction's latest restoration project is a historic Queen Anne Victorian in San Francisco. This time general contractor Mel Turner has to work around the owners who insist on sticking around- along with some ghosts that insist in their own way that the work stops...
The ghosts aren't the only ones standing in the way of the renovations. A crotchety neighbor, Emile Blunt, secretly wants this house, and could be behind some of the disturbances. But when Emile is found dead, it's Mel who appears guilty. Now she must restore the building-and her reputation-before it's too late.

I was on vacations and upset because my brand new D90 adapter died during first charge. It clearly needed 125V and I was feeding it 220V. I couldn't find a new Nikon adapter in my hometown. I checked big camera shops and all they offered were cheap quality Chinese adapters at exorbitant prices. I was returning home dejected, when I spotted this old shop and to my surprize this gentleman did offer a repair. It was a nondescript shop with broken voigtlander & leica type vintage cameras on front panel display along with victorian telephones, WW2 type transistors and dead flash units.

I spotted some old unused lenses scattered in the drawers and on asking if he has any nikkor, he promptly replied- a Nikon 50mm1.2. It must be 30 years old but built like a tank. and I knew I needed it. The deal was settled at a jaw-dropping price. On further asking, he revealed he's running the shop for 40+ years. I could guess he's an expert of every camera made since 1930. I wondered with his knowledge he could easily set up a big shop and earn many times more but he said he's happy with he has got. I thanked him and thought to myself sometimes a little misfortune can bring so much luck.

P.S- On reaching home, I surfed the net and found it is sharpest Nikon lens and sells for about $680. Since 50mm1.4 is cheaper and autofocuses , it is evidently more popular. But my lens is optically equal or better than a f/1.4. My new lens is fully manual and one need to guess the exposure but once you nail these hiccups, it provides the creamist bokeh. I don't mind the trouble. I can't wait to test it in low light.

Ricohflex ricohflex...

Ricohflex ricohflex...

So I guess I haven't fixed my Super Ricohflex as well as I thought I had.

It turns out I didn't rethread the taking lens properly: I unscrewed the second element, which was supposed to stay in the body. The front element, which is used for the actual focusing, is stuck together with the middle element due to the old lubricant, which coagulated after years of non-use, and doesn't seem to want to be unscrewed at all.

Now is the issue of how to get those two elements to get unstuck. I really don't want to pay for professional repair on this cheap camera, and I definitely want the satisfaction of doing it myelf. So far, spraying a little silicon grease in the seams and letting it rest a while didn't do the trick.

So, any camera repair geeks out there who know how to deal with this sort of thing?
